Clearwater, Florida

A great base area from which to explore.

Clearwater sits on a high bluff, unusual for Florida coastal cities, overlooking the beautiful Clearwater Harbor. Except for the horticultural plantings, one might think they were in a Mississippi River town while driving along the waterfront areas within the city.

The city of Clearwater is much like a hub within a giant wheel of attractions and activities that are based around the area. It has relatively  few tourism interests within the city but is central to many around the area. Starting its modern life as primarily a retirement community years ago, according to the  year 2000 census data, approximately 108,000 people call Clearwater their home.  The city can also accommodate its fair share of travelers. There are dozens of beautiful hotels, motels, and resorts in Clearwater. In a Money Magazine poll, Clearwater was also named as the safest city in the state of Florida.

One of the more famous nearby attractions, just a short drive across the causeway, is Clearwater Beach. With an average year-round temperature of 73 degrees, Clearwater Beach was ranked in the Top 10 in a 2001 USA Today poll of Best Beaches in the USA. Clearwater Beach is everything visitors expect from a tropical beach excursion, plus a whole lot more. Clearwater Beach is proud to be certified by The Clean Beaches Council as a Blue Wave Beach, meaning that Clearwater Beach is among one of the best beaches in the United States.

The city of Clearwater is small enough to make tourists feel as though they’ve discovered a secret hideaway, yet bustling enough to entertain even the most discriminating guest. For nature lovers, Clearwater offers access to some of the best outdoor adventures in Florida. Travelers can visit The Clearwater Marine Aquarium and learn about the rehabilitation of rescued marine animals or catch an outdoor concert in picturesque Coachman Park. One major attraction in Clearwater is Moccasin Lake Nature Park. Here patrons can walk along peaceful nature trails and learn about environmental and energy education. You might even spot an alligator or two!

If tamer animals are more your speed, catch a ride with Little Toot Dolphin Tours. The 40-foot authentic tugboat offers a narrated sightseeing tour of the Gulf of Mexico and Clearwater Harbor. Little Toot is a great way to dolphin-watch and is sure to leave travelers with fond memories of their trip.

Because of Clearwater’s proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, area restaurants serve up some of the best seafood in the nation. Clearwater is also lined with gift and antique shops, as well as familiar shops found in any major mall.

Clearwater is just a bridge away from St. Petersburg and Tampa, and 90 miles from Orlando. Clearwater’s ideal location to other major Florida cities makes it a perfect getaway spot. You can access Clearwater easily through two major airports - Tampa International or St. Petersburg-Clearwater International.
